  1. exchange at the airport in Paris. If anything try to just pull it out of the ATM using your bank card, you should get the best exchange rate that way, worst case you can exchange cash in the terminal.

  2. Change only enough money at home to cover your costs on arrival and for minor expenses of your first day in Paris. Exchange rates given by most USA banks are poor and you'll get better rates at most reputable exchange offices in France.

You should pay for most of your larger expenditures with your credit card. Credit card companies get better exchange rates than any individual and this can amount to a significant savings. France is a modern society and  people use credit cards just as much as Americans.

However, credit card companies also differ on their policies concerning fees charged for transactions effected in foregin currencies. The best company to deal with in this regard is Capitol One. If you don't have a Capital One credit card then get one before you leave. It will be worth the trouble of doing so.

  3. I traveled all around Europe for about six weeks, and I never needed to exchange money or use travellers checks except when entering and leaving England. I just pulled Euros from ATM's. My bank charged an exchange rate fee and a $5 fee whenever I took money out at a foreign ATM, but I did some research and this is a lot cheaper than exchanging cash. Also, the exchange rates and fees at airports and train stations will be a lot less favorable than those you can find in the city.

  4. The best way to do is to go to Paris Pigalle area where there are lots of bureau de change which provide the most competitive rate in Paris.

  5. exchange in paris for a better rate. Or just use a plain old credit card!!!

  6. I agree... Get your Euros from an ATM as needed (It's never good to wander around with a bunch of cash.  Also most stores will take cards (inform your bank/creditcard company BEFORE you leave).

Maybe take a small amount of travelers check just in case.

As far as the amount goes... it depends on your activities (and of course the exchange rate).

Have a great time! I'm jealous!

  7. i'd get some euros before you leave, maybe like 75 euros from a bank. then when you get to paris, use your ATM card to get euros if you need more cash. that's what i did. However, just a tip, banks usually charge you MORE when you withdraw money from an ATM than when you just pay for an item with your ATM card. So you might not want to keep a lot of cash. bonne chance and have fun !
