Question:

Going to Recife...tips please?

I'm possibly going to Recife (Brazil) in July for about a week, as a tourist. I heard it's one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil, and what should I do to minimise my chance of getting mugged and/or shot?

I look like a Japanese, so probably it'll be apparent that I'm a tourist and will draw attention from the bad guys. I'm quite worried.

Any tips will be appreciated.

  1. Recife is dengerous, but not so you and other foreigners think. Here are many people look like japanese, german, italian, etc.

Don't get terrified about violence in Brazil. USA is dengerous too. You should be careful but not terified, ok?

After you visit Recife, if you like going to the beach, you should go to state of Alagoas (near Recife) and know Praia do Francês and Praia do Gunga.

    I'm Brazilian.

    wonderful vacacion

  2. The places most tourists go usually are not dangerous. Get safety advices at the hotel you`ll stay.

And don`t carry lots of money and electronic equipment with you. Keep low profile. And try not to look like a tourist. Flowers and strong colors in your clothes are a good indication you are one of them. By the way, japanese descendents are common in Brasil, mainly in southeast states. Having a japanese look is not a strong indication you are foreign.

My suggestions of places to go:

    Porto de Galinhas (nice beach)

Feira de Caruaru (+/- 100km far from Recife. Good place to buy local handycraft work)

Olinda (historical city next to Recife)

If you have enough time, the cities of Joao Pessoa (Paraiba state capital) and Maceio (Alagoas state capital) are also good places to visit.

    Enjoy your trip!

  3. Believe it or not, since Brasil is so diverse, 5-10% of their population is actually Japanese. So they wouldn't be surprised to see you. Also, just don't act like a fruit. Just act as if you're a local, just don't open your mouth since I'm assuming you do not speak Portuguese. They all say it's dangerous, but, with all honesty, every place is dangerous. You just have to blend in. Hope this helps.

    Boa sorte! (Good Luck)

  4. Recife is NOT dangerous for tourists.
