  1. Yes you will need a Visa. The best way to get one is to apply to the russian embassy in the US and they will sort you out. However first you need an 'invitation' from wherever you are staying in Russia, ie. hotel or friend. If it is a hotel you are staying at, they will send you an invitation when you make your reservation. You simply need to take this along with you to the russian embassy. Once you are in russia, you then need to go straight away to register your Visa, which the hotel should do for you upon arriving.

  2. Yes you will. You will need to arrange it well in advance so that you have it in hand at the time of your trip or you will not be allowed into the country.

Check the Russian Embassy nearest you - can also research online.

  3. Yes - and a pack of Marlboros

  4. Like the first answerer said, you will need a visa to visit Russia. You don't really need a letter of invitation from someone there, although that might probably help. What IS required is "a standard tourist confirmation from a hosting authorized Russian travel agency or a hotel, registered with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a voucher from your hotel or travel agency in Russia". A complete list of the requirements and other necessary information can be found from the website of the Russian embassy. You can also download the application form from there.
