Going to St thomas?

Question

This year my mom decided that we should go to the st thomas in the virgin islands. Im really excited but dose anyone have any recomendations of what to do or see down thier? Including activities and things I should bring?

      Gun crimes, homicides put V.I. among most violent places to live in U.S.

      Homicides in the Virgin Islands reached a record level in 2007, and gun

      crimes surged, despite a highly touted law enforcement initiative to take

      illegal firearms off the street.

      The territory's homicides rose above the record set just one year earlier,

      armed robberies spiked and shootings skyrocketed, according to statistics

      compiled by The Daily News. The original source for many of those reports

      was the Police Department's blotter, which is the department's unofficial

      record of all crimes reported to police.

      The violence particularly increased in St. Thomas, which surpassed St.

      Croix in most crime statistics for the first time in recent years. Before

      2007, the two islands had roughly the same number of homicides, armed

      robberies and shootings.

      There were indications near the close of 2007, however, that changes in

      police tactics and new task-force operations targeting high crime areas

      were proving successful.

      Those operations, which led to several arrests and the seizure of many

      illegal guns, were spurred by an initiative Gov. John deJongh Jr.

      announced in October to combat gun crime. The initiative focused on

      increasing cooperation between local and federal law enforcement agencies

      and was formalized in a memorandum of understanding between local and

      federal prosecutors.

      In compiling its statistics, The Daily News tallied every published report

      of homicides, armed robberies and serious shootings.



      Homicides and shootings

      Last year, of the 46 homicides in the Virgin Islands, 27 were on St.

      Thomas, 16 were on St. Croix and three were on St. John. One of those

      homicides was the result of a police shooting on St. John that was ruled

      justifiable.

      In 2006, there were 44 total homicides - 23 on St. Thomas and 21 on St.

      Croix - of which four were ruled justifiable, according to Daily News

      homicide statistics.

      The 2007 total means the territory remains one of the most violent places

      under the American flag.

      The Virgin Islands homicide rate per capita is 42 homicides for every

      100,000 residents. The national rate is 5.5 slayings per 100,000

      residents.

People go to St Thomas for two things, beach time and shopping.  I have been to St Thomas a few times on cruise ships and it is the best destination in the Caribbean for shopping.  They have all of the name brand stores selling everything from watches and jewelry to clothing.  If you are a shopper you'll be in paradise and get good prices too.

St Thomas has some great beaches.  Most people will tell you to go to Megan"Bay and that one is nice.  But we went to Sapphire  Beach last time and it was less crowded and just as nice.  Here's a guide to beaches on St Thomas: http://www.vinow.com/stthomas/beaches_st...

There are not a lot of sights to see in St Thomas if you take a tour, maybe a day's worth.  But for a good tour take a ferry over to St Johns and go to the pristine beaches there, and maybe tour the island too.  The ferry ride is not expensive and its short.  Here's a link to St John's beaches:  http://www.vinow.com/stjohn/beaches_stj/

Bring plenty of swim wear, sun screen and bug spray like Off or something for mosquitoes.

Things you should take... bathing suits, several. Shorts, though not too short. Lightweight cotton clothing. Comfortable walking shoes, flip flops, heels only if you plan on going to a nice dinner at least once. Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat. Little to no jewelry.

What to see... the best things to do in St Thomas are shopping and the beaches. You can go to several different beaches, but my favorite growing up was Magens Bay on the north side of the island, not far from where i grew up. Other beaches offer great opportunities for snorkeling. You can also go to Drake's seat on your way to Magens Bay, reportedly the site where Sir Francis Drake used to sit to look out for pirate ships. My dad said it was a tourist gimmick.

There are also historical things to see while you're there, like the oldest synagogue in continuous use on American soil. It's the best I can do since I grew up there and never really did the "touristy" thing.

Good luck, and please be aware of your surroundings...yes, the USVI have become increasingly dangerous. Stupid since the economy relies so heavily on tourism... don't they know not to bite the hand that feeds you? But I remember my childhood there with great fondness. You'll have fun! Bon voyage!
