  1. To be honest, it really isn't any cheaper or convenient to travel from Brisbane to Sydney by train, than it is to fly.  You have to weigh up whether you want to spend 14-16 hours on a train for $110 (one way, economy, more for first class) or $70-$105 (one way) on a plane ticket with Virgin Blue that will get you to Sydney in just over an hour.

Virgin Blue always has great specials on domestic flights around Australia, and are almost always cheaper than Qantas.  They have great specials on at the moment so I would recommend checking their website out for great deals.  They have some flights for as low s $68 one way (with no baggage)!!

Another option is also getting a bus.  Costs are between $85 and $135 (one way) depending if you get a special.  Major downside to this is that the bus takes about 17-18 hours.  You do stop along the way for meals and to have a good stretch, but 17-18 hours is a long time!

My advice would be to fly down, it's cheaper and quicker than a train.  You get to spend more time in Sydney that way!!!

  2. As a general rule of thumb it is cheaper to go by rail, but you can get specials with Qantas sometimes. You can get tickets with Qantas at the moment queensland to sydney $89.00 one way. Whereas a fare on the xpt brisbane to sydney is $110.00 one way economy fare or $155.00 one way first class fare
