Question:

Going to Thailand for a month or two

I am going to Thailand for a month or two in September for the first time. I am trying to find a good place to stay, I would like to find a town with a decent hotel or serviced apartment that is near the beach, but I am not concerned about nightlife, prostitutes or bars. Basically, I just want a peaceful, relaxing place to go.

My only three requirements are: I need in-room internet access, in-room air conditioner and not too expensive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW: I fully understand the 30 day visa runs. Also, if anyone can recommend hospitals/doctors in Thailand that are reliable for getting a physical and all tests done it would be of great service.

  1. try  katathani  resort  at  katanoi  beach, phuket(  it has a/c, room  internet  ,peaceful.relaxing wth  fantastic  view  of  the  sea

  2. Mr. Wiseguy, I'm very tempted to say Dusit Zoo is the largest place to be, but I'm not sure whether they have internet access and air-con for monkeys.

The truth is, I spent nine days some years ago in Samui Island and love it so much....more than any other islands of beaches in Thailand.

Try Chaweng beack, but it may be a little pricey as it becomes hot spot tourist attractions these days. I'm not sure about the in room internet access, but you surely can dial to internet from the hotel room phone line.

Other places that are nice would be Kho Samed, Kho Kood, and many other Kho (which mean island) like PP, Phuket. For the beaches, if you're not keen on redlight district, should head south like Cha-am, Hua Hin, Krabi, Ranong...so on.

I'm sure you can google it and find plenty to offer in all kinds of accommodations on those area. There are many small resorts along the beaches in Thailand these days, but before you go into the sea just make sure that it is recommended to swim in. There are many deads because of the under-current that carry people out to sea esp. in the South and on islands.

I'm longing to do the same you do, but probably next year.

  3. You must have a budget planned already, how much per night have you allotted for your hotel room?  Many cheaper hotels won't have in-room internet connections.   There are lots of cheap internet shops available all over Bangkok and other towns.  Some hotels will have internet access in their lobby.  A laptop isn't really needed unless it is for work or school, but if you have one you can also bring it to an internet shop and pay for your time or even some McDonalds for free surfing.

"Not concerned about nightlife, prostitutes or bars" is an odd statement.  Just because there are bars or nightlife available doesn't mean you have to avail yourself of these services!   No employee of a bar forces you into their bar, thousands of people walk by these places every day and are never kidnapped!

Pattaya hotels are cheaper than Bangkok and Phuket - and yes - there are lots of bars that you have to ignore!  There is a beach at Pattaya and Jomtien for you to get some rays and many hotels have pools.  There are hospitals for physicals too, plus cheap transportation and restaurants!   But you already ruled this city out along with big chunks of Bangkok on lower Sukhumvit Road, Silom and Suriwong with a no bars no nightlife policy!  You also rule out many beach areas in other places in Thailand!   No one forces you into a bar, no bar girl makes you do anything you do not want to do, you do not have to drink or even enter any bars if you don't want to!

    Have a nice (dull) trip.

  4. Samui is great! The warm, tropical waters and beautiful coral reefs off the island make it perfect for scuba diving. Go on the full day speedboat trip to Koh Ang Thong Marine Park. I enjoyed snorkeling, kayaking and trekking to emerald lake (amazing!). Ang Thong was the place that inspired the film "The Beach"

    and is paradise on earth.

I’d recommend Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa Samui http://www.discovery-thailand.com/Hotels... . Superior 66USD, Deluxe Villa 95USD /night. One minute from Sunday Market and 15 minutes walk to the night bazaar. Hotel has large air-conditioned shuttle service from airport (this is a small additional charge, payable direct to the hotel, but saves time and effort getting to/from hotel). Very convenient!  Also, Muang Samui Spa Resort is also brilliant(but more expensive than Baan Chaweng Beach resort).  The location was perfect with all shopping, bars and restaurants at your doorstep, and provided a tranquil and dreamy escape from the day-to-day world. It is also set on a more beautiful stretch of beach. The rooms themselves were large, stylish, clean and had all the special touches. The resort is well maintained, is filled with beautiful greenery, little bridges and a creek running thru it. We found that the staff were always friendly and attentive. The breakfasts were also sensational.

    Have fun!

  5. Go to Thai temples. It is peaceful and relax. Have fun in Thailand

  6. I would recommend the hospitals in bkk - BNH, Bumrungrad, Samitivej are all top of the line facilities..

a quiet beach can be found along the Gulf, south of Hua Hin - but you will likely need transport because the small resorts are a bit isolated..

and in room a/c is usually available in most places - the places that put the a/c outside the room usually go broke quickly.. oh. forgot. you are the wise guy - not me - have fun

  7. With your fiancee, I would recommend Koh Chang Island

Check out the current 2008 photos at http://www.visualthailand.com

Rooms are cheap, internet available, excellent beaches, lots of waterfalls to explore, elephant trekking, can rent honda wave moped for 200 baht a day and drive around the whole island, which to me was the best time my girlfriend and I ever had.

Lot of cheap inexpensive food too.

The west side of the island is where the hotels are, the east side still has the local fishing villages. Can even do a home stay with a Thai family for a day or two.

Do yourself a favor and visit the photos at http://www.visualthailand.com it is a beautiful experience to share with someone special.

  8. Bumrungrad off Sukhumvit (Boulevard) near Soi Nana Nua (Street) has a full medical check up (full blood work, chest xray, ultrasound, urine, stool and eye exam) for about $350 (11,500 baht) to a basic (some blood tests and a chest Xray) for  $77.50 (2600 baht).

I have had the comprehensive and it was well worth the money (It cost me $300 for a doctors visit in the US).  They give you a complete workup to take with you at the end.

For a place to stay I would suggest Hua Hin.  The King and Queen have a Palace there and the beaches seem very nice.  Its about 300km (180 miles from Bangkok).  You can take a train, a plane or a bus to get there.  Because its a resort you should be able to find accommodations too fit your budget.

    Try

The Captain in Hua Hin, Thailand

57/4 Soi Saracam, $22 per night WIFI
