  1. 1. The average high in January is 40 F.

    3. Even on a student budget you should try to see the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, which have many incredible paintings.  The Rijksmuseum also has a large and very interesting exhibit on Dutch history.  The canal boat tour is touristy but well worth doing.  You should also consider a day trip to a more traditional Dutch town like Delft, Leiden, or Alkmaar.

  2. In January it is pretty cold, about 37 degrees F according to the website below.  I remember going in March a few years ago and I was pretty chilly because of the cold temps and the constant rain.  Though I didn't buy any herbs at any coffee shops, I think I remember the prices ranging from really low like around $10-$15 to really high - the prices were sorted by where the herb came from, the color, the "strength"... etc.

I don't remember prices, but some of the most fun I had on the trip was taking a bike tour (we did the Yellow Bikes Tour) because it is the main transportation around Amsterdam and you get to see almost the entire city in just a few hours!  Also the Anne Frank House was an incredible "museum" to visit.  I also enjoyed the Van Gogh museum a lot because I am a fan of his artwork.  The city is beautiful, there is no end to free sight seeing by just taking walks along the canals!
