  1. safety is not an issue. police will be everywhere!

cybertheft, cyberterrorism, is a problem. If you connect to the hotel's internet access, have a very good antivirus and spyware blocker installed!

COUNT YOUR CHANGE! they like to slip you a fractional note when they owe you a full yaun.

    Ni how is hello

ni how ma is hi, how you doing.

    shay shay is thank you

puh shay is no thank you

and use woo ey nee cautiously, it means I love you

  2. We travel to China regularly for our business.  The Chinese are not going to be rude to you unless you are rude to them!  China is a wonderful country at a crossroads between traditional and modernism. You are staying in a big city, much larger than New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.

If you are staying in an American/English hotel you should be fine.  The hotel will give you a card that will have directions to the hotel in English & Chinese, you can give this to anyone and they can give you directions or take you back to your hotel.  Get a map from the hotel so you can orient yourself.  The maps are also in English & Chinese.  Yes, the Fridays restaurant and A&W Rootbeer have nearly the same menu as you find here in the US!

Unless you go around flashing a lot of money and jewelry I think you are as safe in China from the Chinese people as you are in New York City!  In another words, don't take unnecessary risks.

Learn a few words of Chinese...like hello and thank you. It will work wonders! Have a good trip.  This will be a wonderful experience. Go to some temples and see some other sites while you are there.

  3. The most important thing to watch for is pickpockets.  Keep your bag in front of you since some thieves will razor the bottom to collect your things as they fall out.  If you wear a f***y pack keep your hand on it.  Thieves in China are very slick.  They can be in and out of your purse or pack in less than 30 seconds when you're not paying attention.  I had this happen to me in Guilin.  I was lucky to be carrying my money in my pocket and not my purse that day.  Another friend had her purse stolen from behind her back when she leaned forward to get some food that was across the table.  They took it right off the seat of her chair.  A friend and I both had backpacks stolen from us at McDonald's on two separate occasions.  I've seen a kid try to go under another friend's winter coat to get into her pockets.  Later on a thief succeeded in stealing her wallet out of her purse just after she finished buying groceries.  Her husband had his mobile phone stolen twice while he was on the subway so don't carry your phone in an accessible place while you're in China.  Watch out for small begger children.  When they latch onto you they will try to get into your pockets.  I've seen this several times.  Unfortunately the only way to get them off is usually to push them, sometimes hard, since they stick to you like leeches.  This is a huge problem in Kunming.  I didn't notice it being such a problem in Beijing, but if you see a dirty little child headed your way avoid it at all costs.  If you give them money it only encourages their parents or handler to keep pushing them on people.  It's harsh, but you have to do it.  Thievery is really going to be the only thing to worry about while you are there.  Except for pickpockets China is very safe.

  4. ive never been

but my cousin has adopted 3 chinese kids from beijing and surrounding areas

in general asia is considered very safe, people are kind and always helping each other

honestly, how many murders do you hear about in asia? its very low

but since the olympics are going to be going on, you'll deff. want to be careful, they know tourists have money and might try to rob you

just like any other place where is it poor

only bring what you need and keep your cell phone, and cash close to you

  5. Theres no need to worry.

Believe it or not Beijing will control the weather to the best it can do.

If they see any rain/storm clouds heading Beijings way they will control them. See link and I have seen the base in the mountians west of Beijing in action.

As there will be with many police about the rudest thing there most likely to try on you is the staring and the rush for the doors then the subway pulls into the station.

No you not get robbed, crime in Beijing is less than that of the USA.

Terrorist threat is like every other place in the world at the moment.

  6. I was in Beijing in December 2007 with my family.  We always felt safe.  The people weren't rude, but they weren't overly friendly either.

You should just always be cautious and aware of your surroundings, any where you travel to.  Don't take money out in public, stuff like that.

The service people (hotels and restaurants) were all friendly and helpful.
