I spent three months in Alicante last winter. Took a day to Benidorm. Didn't like Benidorm: too many high rises. Too much tourism influence. More likely to hear dutch german english than spanish.

There is a good trail over Sierra Helada. Starts in Benidorm ends in El Albir. Good views of Mediteranean and surrounding mountains.

Big fort in Alicante

Alicante has roman ruins.

There are buses and trains to Murcia and Valencia. Madrid is accessible by high speed train from Alicante
