When i graduate high school i will be barely 17. And i want to go straight to college that year. Do i have to get emancipated from my parents to do this? I plan to go to college out of state. I am very mature for my age and i know i could take care of myself. I already do.

  1. Haha, no! Of course not. A lot of people go to college at 17.

  2. Of course not.  In many countries like Australia it is the standard age to go to university.  And in those countries they have 3 year degrees - the equivalent of the US first year is studied in grade 11 and 12.  To improve chances of getting into schools some private schools start year 11 and 12 subjects in grade 10 - ie the same as a US HS freshman.  You will be fine.

    Thanks

  3. no you can go to the college without emancipatation however you will have to obey the local laws regarding minors such as local curfew

  4. Are they preventing you from going out of state?  You can go anywhere when you are 18, but you cannot get financial aid without your parents' income on your FAFSA form.  It's not that easy to become emancipated, and it would take several months at the least.

  5. you do not. youll find many first year students your age, in some cases even 16. im entering college at 17 as well.

  6. Sure you can got to college at 17.  I wonder if there is some underlying problem to this.  Do your parents object?  That would make it harder but not impossible.  Maybe you could reassure them by agreeing to stay in a dorm (I think a good idea anyway for the first year--hard enough to handle college without budgeting for an apt.)  Are you working with your high school counselor?  S/he can help you with lots of college questions.  And good luck!
