Going to get my car registered, how do i go about getting the car insured, is it essential?

Not too sure, i have the safety certificate and rego paperwork and all my id im just not sure abt the insurance details. Most helpful answer 10 points.

  1. most states wont let you register your car unless you have minimum insurance coverage.   Contact several car insurance companies(from yellow pages or friends recommendation) get them to quote you....the price on state required insurance, pick the best one and go from there.

  5. You must have compulsory 3rd party insurance to cover injury to your passengers and other people. You do not have to take out any other insurance, either comprehensive or 3rd party property, but it is VERY unwise not to have at least 3rd party property insurance. 3rd party property or comprehensive insurance must be taken out separate from registration and compulsory 3rd party insurance. If you have an accident with someone's brand new Mercedes (or whatever), you may have to pay for repair or replacement of their expensive car if you don't have at least 3rd party property insurance.

  6. Call your DMV before going to register the car. Most states now require proof of insurance before they will issue tags.
