  1. A soup kitchen.

  2. Check out the Peace Corp and YWAM (Youth with a Mission)

  3. Americorps NCCC program too-they have a site

  4. If you are a Christian you can look into helping other churches.

I went to Mexico City for a week on a missions trip. What we did on this missions trip is totally different then what goes on other missions trip.

  5. Check out Canadian Eyesight International. They do eye surgeries in India for Blind People. Its a very good cause and all the money is sent directly to the cause. Check the website www.canadianeyesightinternational.ca

  6. It would be tough to find an opportunity that is entirely free.  You will have to pay your flight and room and board for most programs.

Check out www.craigslist.org volunteers under the community section.

If you contact non-profits privately, you are more likely to cut down the cost to volunteer which is the norm for such work.  I'm with Peace Corps and if you want to go to a developing country, you can contact the local PC office and offer to help current volunteers with their projects.  You may get to crash at their places for free.  You would need to pay for food and transport but would be the cheapest way to volunteer.  The benefit is that you wouldn't have to spend time developing rapport and projects as this would have been established by the volunteer and the volunteer benefits from an extra body.
