  1. Firstly, Sue mentioned National Holidays in Spain and I think she said there was a holiday on the 8th December. Well, that's correct but there are two in December, the 6th December which is Constition Day and the 8th which is the Immaculate Conception Day. Sue is not really correct when she say's Spain closes down everytime they have a holiday. Yes, the main shops close, but my supermarket in the small town where I live will be open. That will apply to many small towns or villages within Spain. All the restaurants will be open and tourist attractions depending on the time of year, though the bodegas in Jerez will probably be closed to.

Jerez de la Frontera is an interesting town. Be sure not to miss the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. They put on shows for the tourists once a week all through the year. It is well worth seeing. It used to be on a Thursday morning.

The drink Sherry comes from Jerez. Any fortified wine which has sherry on the label will have come from Jerez. There are many bodegas in Jerez and most are well worth a visit, especially the free tasting afterwards.

Estepona is on the Costa De Sol. Estepona has suffered like many places with overdevelopement, but if you take your time to explore the region there are some amazing places to see. Behind Estepona there is the Sierra Bermeja. Check out the website below

Take time to visit other places not to far away. The mountain village of Casares. Or along the coast to San Pedro de Alcantara or Puerto Banus. Go inland from there to another little gem in the mountains, that is Ojen or travel the mountain route to Ronda.

I think you could have a great time if the weather behaves itself. It can often be very pleasant at that time of the year.

  2. My only experience in Jerez is to try to get to the Bodegas.

CHECK THE CALENDAR!  They shut down for every national holiday.  I know that 8th December is a national holiday.  Every time the Church sneezes it's a national holiday, so you need to be sure that if you plan a tour, you know what days things shut down.

Have a great trip!  (I know less than nothing about Estapona.  Sorry.)

  3. In December Estepona and Jerez will be totally empty, ghost cities, only retired germans and that. Note that they are both cities that live from the tourism...try to imagine and equivalent in your country. You'll find the locals there and the weather won't be too great, I mean, beach areas in winter suck because of the wind. If you want solitude and calmness, you'll find it. You can take advantage that there won't be cues, you'll have fresh fish at all the restaurants, good treatment, no rushes asking for the bill...no stress.

Both the 6th and the 8th of Dec. are festive.

And FYI, there are more festivities in the US than in Spain; statistically we have more working days. In the US everytime you sneeze you take a holiday...(c'mon, Labour Day, St Patrick's, Thanks Giving, Independence Day, Cristopher Columbus....)
