  3. Try www.laterooms.com they often have very good deals on late rooms including loads in the centre of town.  The Strand palace is always a good bet as it's a clean decent 3 star.  When you find a hotel you like the look of, check out the reviews at www.tripadvisor.com to make sure it's not a flea pit and read reviews by people who have already stayed there.  It is a sad fact that you do get what you pay for in London so try and get the best one you can for your money.

  4. It would help if you added a quick note to say what "affordable" means to you. =) Visitor accommodation in London is notoriously expensive and at the cheap end there isn't much to recommend.

For example, student friends of mine occasionally spend time in London doing research at the British Museum and British Library. They usually stay at the St Athans Hotel (near Russell Street tube station). I've just asked them and they paid £50 for a double room with a proper English breakfast included.

They say that the rooms are tiny and it's always busy there. They've always found the rooms clean and the staff friendly; but they stress that it really is a budget option!

TripAdvisor's reviewers come back either loving it or hating it: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-...

My favourite way of booking visiting friends accommodation they adore is through Uptown Reservations.

Not hotels nor strictly b&bs, but guest rooms in very posh private homes in top districts (Chelsea, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Kensington and the West End) -- marvellous for your weekend of "touristy things". =D

Rooms always have their own bathrooms; sometimes even a private sitting room too. Breakfast is top-notch continental, and the owners always take pride in helping with local tips for places to visit, where to eat out etc.

Double rooms start from £95 per night and singles from £72 -- comparable to the very bottom end of the London hotel market.

Have a look at the website -- you need to give them a call/ drop them an email for specific info, since these are private homes.

  5. The Pembridge Palace hotel was perfect for us, affordable, clean and in good condition, and the perfect location!

About 5 minutes walk from bayswater station (One stop from Paddington, and is connected to the district and circles lines), a pub just round the corner that has really tasty satisfying food, a short walk to a street that has every kind of restaurant you could imagine, as well as a mini sainsburys where you can get all the odds and ends you would need. There's also a tescos and a boots on the same street as bayswater station, and a shopping centre that has a cinema at the top. On top of all that theres a chinese supermarket if thats youre thing one one side, and hyde park on the other!

My gf and I stayed there recently, it really was the perfect location.

Oh and its walkable distance to notting hill and portabello road, which is a great and really cool little shopping area.

It's a short tube ride to most tourist attractions, and really, anything within walking distance of tourist attractions is going to be hella expensive.

  6. I think that Bed and Breakfasts are the best way to go in London when it comes to central and inexpensive lodging. Plus you get free breakfast. London B&B's aren't as charming and homey as the ones in the country, they're much less expensive than large hotels and offer private ensuite rooms that are quite clean.

I've stayed in the Vegas hotel http://www.vegashotel.co.uk/ near Victoria Station. This room was bizarre since you entered through the loo to get to the bed, however, at least it was ensuite, cheap, clean, included breakfast and had a television. That area around and behind Victoria has dozens of similar B&Bs, and the same is true of areas surrounding most of the city's main central train stations, King's cross area has loads, it's not quite as close to the city center but it is close to excellent transportation. Staying near Victoria is a good idea because of all the great transportation connections and it's a safe area. http://www.4hotels.co.uk is a good place to start B&B shopping. It also lets you browse by region of London. The bigger sites like www.hotels.com, www.expedia.com, etc. usually have some B&B listings for London as well.

I'd also recommend the Hotel St. Simeon B&B in Kensington http://www.stsimeon.com/. This B&B had spacious rooms, gorgeous lobby, great breakfasts and was in a really nice area of the city, right off Gloucester Road tube station.

Rates for these types of B&Bs usually start at around 40 pounds ($80) for a double room. Cheers!

  7. Try IBIS hotels

  8. The Hilton Metropole.

It's opposite a tube station (Edgware Road) which is easy for travel and is a 10 minute walk away from Oxford Street, staff are very polite and helpful.

    Have fun in London!
