I'm 27, rode when i was 13 for a few years. Just started back for the summers about 2 yrs ago and i haven't really gone pass the walk-trot stage. It could be me as to why i haven't advanced but i did have a friend that has rode forever watch me and she siad i was fine. Anyway going to look at another barn because the same issue has come up from last year- my instructor just lets me trot around the ring for an hour saying good job! Irritating, also when there is another lady there who she is friends with she barely talks to me at all. So just wondering what i should look for in a new place. My interest in just in pleasure riding no showing. thanks!

  1. I would ask around to other horse people to see what they recommend.

If you are looking to advance I would express your concerns with your potential instructors.

There are some barns the specifically advertise that they are helping the advancing rider.

You could even do one lesson like a test drive and see if you like it.

Also, do a walk through. See if you are comfortable with the people, horses and surroundings.

Good Luck, I hope you find the right one!

  2. Don't waste your time looking at a show barn. these barns will often tell you their show schedules and show prices on their websites. you want a barn that looks clean and well ventilated. the tack room should be orderly and the horses should look healthy. watch some lessons to get a sense of how an instructor teaches. also, tell the instructor that you just want pleasure ride. also, ask horsey people to recommend some barns. i hope this helps!

  3. Look for a barn that aims for correct horsemanship - it sounds best for you. Also, a friendly barn with well taken care of horses.

    Hope for the best =]

  4. I like the idea of scheduling lessons at other barns and going from there.  You can also check out the accommodations for your horse while you're there.
