Help me understand the new laws for crossing the border. If you are going to Mexico by land all you need is a drivers license and a birth certificate. The only time you need a passport is if you are traveling by air? Do I have this correct?

  1. If you go before January 31, all you need is your drivers license.  Once the 31st comes, you'll need your birth certificate and your drivers license.

If you fly, you need your passport now.  According to the website, all it says is that at a future date to be determined, passports will be required.  It no longer says sometime during the summer and with at least 60 days notice.

The passport rule could change to June of 2009.  Keep your ears open and call your senator to find out if anything has changed in regards to when passports will be required.  http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/200712...

If you're going to drive into Mexico, then just read the following answer I posted to a previous question.  The above rules will still apply.  http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...

  2. No... passport driving or flying its current.
