  1. I don't know about your school, but at my school students get dropped for missing their first few days of class.  If your school has this kind of policy, you should perhaps e-mail your professors and let them know you won't be there.

    As for the French class...

In my experience, the first week of language classes is always pretty easy.  It's French 1, so they don't expect you to be able to speak French at all the first day.  Usually, our first day was dedicated to going over the syllabus, and we typically didn't learn much of the language.  The second day starts off really simple, with how to greet others and how to introduce yourself and others.  Also, you would probably learn how to point out simple classroom objects and maybe some countries. If this doesn't sound too difficult for you, then maybe you should consider taking the course if you're able to enroll.

  2. Are you talking about college? They don't care if you ever show up. Pay your tuition and they're fine. When you appear on the 2nd day of the class, tell the prof that you were out of state and weren't at the first session. Ask for a syllabus and get busy reading it. If you really care, then ask other students what you missed on the first day. If you don't, then don't worry about it.

However, you are risking aggravating people because they showed up and you didn't. So you have to find someone who is willing to waste their time helping you since you didn't plan to be there when you should. That's your choice.
