beautiful country but don't fall prey to the locals who will tempt you to go and see "animals" in a little boat. They will try and charge you a pretty price, don't go in the 1st place. Take lots of repellent and tea tree oil. The beach vendors are like hawks, learn how to say "no thanks" politely from one of the locals. Take pens because they have an accute shortage, the schoolkids will love you for it. Also, take bags of sweeties to bribe the locals! Try and get up to the tea plantations,truly superb.Check the lonely planet website for up to date info.

www.half.com will have a lot of books on sites and attractions in Sri Lanka, some as low as 75 cents. There is certainly a lot to do here. Whether you like historical sites, abandoned cities, beaches, spas, cuisine, day trips, and so forth. Sri Lanka was one of the hardest hit countries from the Tsunami, and many people there who were once struggling are now in dire poverty. If you can, please help them with a small donation. The Sri Lankans are very very friendly, but their country is in a dark time right now as it recovers from the Tsunami.
