Question:

Going to the beach after it rains??

I know that if you go to the beach after it rains you can get sick and stuff because of all the runoff.... but say it rains on Monday, so on Monday all the c**p in the gutters run out to the ocean, then it rains again Friday, would it be bad to go out on Saturday considering all the stuff already washed out to the ocean?

If that didnt make sense, let me see if I can rephrase it. If It rains and the ocean is dirty, then a couple days later it rains again, would it be bad to go in the ocean after the 2nd rain, since most of the trash and c**p already washed out...???

THANKS

  1. Don't worry about it.

Everyone always tells me I shouldn't go surfing after/during rain because of bacteria and the such, but I just go anyways because its usually glassy after rain.

After 15 years of this I HAVE NEVER CONTRACTED A SICKNESS/INFECTION FROM SURFING IN OR AFTER THE RAIN.

  2. wait like 5 days after it rains. Its nasty water your swimming in and stuff, not to mention sometimes drink it.

  3. Here on the island of Kauai (only Hawaiian island with navigable rivers) where there are a lot of streams and rivers emptying into the Pacific Ocean, we are careful about surfing after heavy rains because of: a) bacteria and chemicals from the many agricultural activities (herbicides, pesticides, and bacteria from the cow pastures);  b) debris and dirt from runoff (we are still a very rural island) that make the water appear like chocolate; and finally and most important c) hungry sharks that love to feed in the merky waters that occur after heavy rains.   The rivers and streams wash down the small fish and shrimp that the medium sized fish just love; and the sharks like to feed on the medium sized fish.  Many of our shark attacks happen in merky waters after heavy rainfall.

It doesn't matter whether you surf after the 2nd or 3rd rain, the same problems are still there.

  4. If its mostly light rain...just stay away from the rivers and drainage things as they will be carrying all the junk from inland. Take extra vitamin C and zinc and bath really weeelll after....oh and really try and not get water in your mouth and nose...cheers

  5. no worries

  6. blah blah blah, just go and dont be a panzee, i live on the rainiest city with river run off we have no choice and i have never gotten sick, just take  an extra long shower.
