I'm not going to actually work out tomorrow, just being introduced to the gym in general.

One of the guys who works there (I assume he has qualifications as all of the guys in there do) is touring me round it for a while just so I can get the general vibe.

I'm 16, and just a bit less than 140lbs, 5ft 4, and I have no idea what to expect.

Will I be intimidated by those there?

Or will it be fairly relaxed and straight forward?

I basically explained to him over the phone why I rang to find out, and he seemed very understanding and kind.

I don't know what to expect when I finally get there tomorrow though.

Anyone been in the same shoes as me, and can tell me something from their experience?

  1. I would also ask for a trial period (1-2 weeks) before signing any paperwork.  That way you can check out the gym before committing.  If he does not want to give you a trial period, use the "I'll be back."  That always work for whenever someone is trying to sell you something, whether is a car or a gym membership.  They want to make the sale while you are still there, since who knows whether or not you will be back.  Most reputable gyms will give you a trial.

Most likely, he will be trying to "sell" you with how great the gym is.  Unless you know for sure this is the gym you want to join, don't let him overwhelm you into signing a contract.  Even a monthly contract, with process fees, could cost you $100 when you cancel after signing the contract.

Check out their class schedule, just to see what they offer.  Ask if your membership is includes using other gyms in the chain.  Ask about is there is any sales going on where they waive the processing fee or if they know of any in the near future.  It is standard in most gyms to get 1-2 trainer sessions for free to show you how to use the equipment, ask if that is the case and how to schedule one after joining.

While you are there, check out the cleanness of the locker room, are dumbbells put away neatly, are there paper towels or wipes available for wiping down the equipment.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Chances are you'll feel a comfortable atmosphere. Don't be intimidated by the big muscle-bound tank guys who curl 100 lbs. each. Work at you own pace. You can probably also ask for a trainer to guide you in the right direction.
