  1. You can bring back as much as you want........however (there is always a "however")

The maximum value you may import without payment of Duty and V.A.T. is Eur175. You are obliged to declare any goods above that value.

As others have said,  if you are stopped by Customs you are unlucky. The taking off tags advice is OK, but do remember that if you are stopped it is up to you to prove that goods were purchased in Ireland. If you can't, then Customs may detain the goods until you produce receipts. If you don't produce receipts with 28 days the goods are seized and disposed of.

If you are stopped play dumb, don't get thick with the official and if you have to pay the duty - grin and bear it.

  2. you can tell sean m is irish cant you he got the question the wrong way round.

THE LIMIT IS £145  over this you will have to pay but you will be unlucky if they even stop you.

if you buy clothes remove the price tags and all that and just say you aint bought nothing

  3. Hi,

I just came from Ireland.  First, don't even bring luggage.  Bring a back pack with one days clothes and then go shopping here:

    1.  Flea markets/swap meets

    2.  Malls

    3.  Discounters (Walmart, Target, K Mart)

    4.  Outlet malls (not so many, but very much worth a day trip to).

As for limits, I just tell the customs agent they are my clothes and personal items.  I wouldn't bring them back with lables.  The US doesn't care if you bring back goods you bought here to Ireland.

  4. Yes there is a limit. Don't know what it is though... It is only a couple of hundred Euro though... If the customs stop you on return to Ireland they will probably charge you tax on your US purchases. Clothes with tags are a dead giveaway....

  5. Just wear any clothes that you can on the flight, and remove all tags from clothes and receipts. They wont stop you unless you are trailing 10 bags behind you, i dont think they stop anyone.

  6. well wilfred b, at least sean didn't use £. we are using euros in ireland now, just so you know.

  7. No.

But you will be liable for duty and- most notably - VAT on everything over your duty free limit. This limit is quite low.

You can get a refund on sales tax paid in the US - ask the shop for the forms.
