  1. You don't say where your grandma lives. That would have a major impact on options! Swim suits are of minimal interest in Sapa for example.

However, if you have never been there before, do yourself a favor, and bring your grandma and other relatives some gifts - leave the ouija board and laptop at home.

Viet Nam is a fabulous place! If you are lucky enough to have learned a bit of tieng Viet from your parents, why don't you use the month to learn about the culture, brush up on your language skills, meet the local kids, learn something? The Vietnamese people I have met in Ha Noi, and elsewhere, are wonderful - don't miss the opportunity!

You can go to the internet cafes and use a machine for almost nothing, by US standards. If all you would use the machine for is e-mail, leave it at home.

Have fun. Learn something! And don't get sun burned!

  2. The first thing you should pack is a camera, that way you'll be able to take pictures of your family and give them as gifts (picture proccessing is very cheap over here). If you can find any other games (like monopoly, cribbage, etc) bring them along with you, too. The children in our neighborhood love playing games. You don't say where your grandmother lives. If it is in one of the bigger cities, there will be plenty of things to do and see. If she lives in the country, it could get a little boring.

You are allowed to bring two suitcases weighing either 50 or 70 pounds each depending which airline you take, in addition to your carry-on/laptop. Ask your parents to help you pick out gifts to bring to your family. I usually bring lots of toys for my children and nephews/nieces etc. I also bring stuff like Jello, chocolate, penut butter and jelly and fluff. They don't have a lot of American style foods here or they are difficult to find. This trip I brought "bubble guns" that make millions of bubbles when you pull the trigger, lots of fun ! One last thing you should bring is re-chargeable batteries and a charger. Make sure that it will take 220 volts. Batteries are expensive over here or they are cheap and don't work for more than a few minutes. Anyway, my wife is telling me that we have to go and visit relatives. Ask your parents to help you with your list. They have a better idea of people want and /or need over here.

    Have a great trip!

  3. don't bring anything just enjoy the environment

almost anyone here would die to stay there for a month and wouldn't think twice of what to bring if they get bored

go socialize with the locals =)
