Question:

Going vegetarian at college?

I am interested in becoming vegetarian and eventually making the switch to a vegan lifestyle, but I'm worried about the switch to a vegetarian life because I will be starting college in the fall and I wont really be able to shop and cook on my own. I'll basically be eating only at the campus cafeterias, so I'm worried about the transition and quite possibly very limited food choices. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this? And have any of you faced the same dilemma? If so, what did/have you done to deal with it?

Also, I haven't made the switch yet, but I started a 30 day commitment to eat no meat. Are there any sites you would recommend with some good vegetarian recipes?

Thanks for all the help!

  1. there are lots of vegetarian friendly foods in the college cafeteria

they usually have pb&j's, veggie sandwiches, cheese pizza, veggie pizza, chips with no msg in them, vegetarian friendly pasta..and more

    you can do it!

as for recipes buy morningstar farm vegetarian meat substitute, tofu pups, smart dogs,

eat lots of legume and nuts

here is a site to help you http://www.vrg.org/

  2. cool u must be skinny

  3. When I went to college in 1991, one whole side of the cafeteria 'scramble' was veg and vegan.  They had lots of rice dishes, walnut-lentil burgers, bean dishes, veggies, etc, and it was good food.  It was the non-veg food that was bad!  So if a college was already doing it in 1991 and before, I'm sure you'll have no problems getting veg food in the caf.

  4. There is probably a higher proportion of vegetarians among college women than any other population group. So you should have no problem finding vegetarian food at most college eating facilities.

Vegetarian or no, welcome to the hallowed tradition of awful, semi-inedible food at college food facilities!

  5. I completely understand.  First I would contact the college cafeteria to find out if they offer vegetarian variety on their menu.  Lately many cafeterias in general have begun to offer a nice variety of vegetarian dishes since more people have differing dietary needs.

But in case they do not have enough to satisfy or delight, see below for one vegetarian recipe index site you may find very helpful.

  6. I say that you should totally try to become a vegetarian. I'm sure that the college you will be attending will have vegetarian choices for you.

  7. Talk to your school dietitian about your diet needs. If it's a large school they should have plenty of vegetarian choices. Check to see if your dorm has a kitchen, ours does, you will be able to make high protein snacks in there. My roommate and I make up a veggie chili and stuff like that to supliment what we can get in the cafeteria.
