Golbal Warming?

Question

Is it just another "crisis" to scare us into paying more taxes etc (e.g. acid rain, the millenium bug etc)

Whats your opinion?

First of all XerinX stated that the Antarctic cap will melt and flood us all. Well to correct that statement the Antarctic cap is larger than it has been in the last 20 years. Next; Zig says that this year will be the first "we know of" that the arctic cap will melt nearly completely. That's not true the "North west passage" was made in 1905. Then again twice in 1940. We know for a fact that the northern cap has melted this far before. Alarmists only look at the past 30 years. The last 30 yrs are the total basis for the man made global warming hoopla.

Clean air, clean water, these are great ideas. They are worth striving towards. The ends DO NOT justify the means. Do not try to scare people into living a more green life style.

Do not politicize science. Do not use junk science to further your political goals.

Global warming is real, and I believe that the tipping point for the  planet's weather to go into total meltdown maybe rapidly approaching. I also believe that (in the UK) it has been effecting us now for the past 5-6 years  with  the cold damp air sinking south  from  the Arctic melt off,  being shunted directly onto all or parts of the UK by the Atlantic wind currents and turning our summers into a hellish  mixture of summer and winter. Personally I'll pay extra taxes if it get this mess sorted out, however I think  it maybe to little to late. Hope I'm wrong!!

I was in the Antarctic 4 years ago, the scientists working there told me that the main body of the continent , 93% of the land area, was getting colder and the ice increasing, the only part that was loosing ice was the peninsular, 7% of the land area and that was doe to erosion from sea currents. Since then I have been a global warming sceptic.

Im a enivromentalist type of person but Im on both sides. I mean I think that its really happening and its not a joke but I odnt htink the goverment has to tax us. I do belive though that we need to but more effort into this problem. I also belive that it is just one of earths many periods and eras of time it has gone through and that this is just another one. I also think that the human race is helping speed up the process by quite a bit.

If it proves to be true and we ignore the warnings, it will become the stuff of legend of stupid people ignoring important warnings.

Well, we probably should do some things regardless of whether GW is sound science or it is not.

We should conserve fossil fuels.

We should plan and protect regarding floods and droughts.

We should take efforts to be able to live comfortably with less use of fossil fuels.

We should avoid using up available resources making too many things that end up in landfill.

We should avoid using up reserves within our control, even if doing so would lower prices.

We should harvest large volumes of vegetation from growing oceanic dead zones to be used as bio-fuels.

We do not need to know whether GW or AGW are right for any of these to be appropriate.

Yes, it is like acid rain and the millennium bug in that both problems held the potential to cause serious damage and required a lot of work to avoid those problems.

Why is it that computers weren't messing up when 2000 came, because countless dedicated people, like myself, spent many hours rewriting code and updating systems to avoid problems because we knew what was coming so we worked to change it.

Acid rain was tackled by power companies installing taller stacks and scrubbers to reduce the concentration of sulfur dioxide in their emissions.

Climate change is also a problem that is going to require a lot of technological development and other work to change how we do things.

I really think Global warming is true and is coming on us FAST.

I have read that scientists think that this year will be the first (of that we know) that there will be no ice or snow in the artic for a short period of time.  Already, the ice and snow and glaciers in the artic and antartic have melted by probably over 10-15%.  

Weather conditions seem to keep on getting worse:

Here in the midwest, the storms have not stopped.  We keep on getting storm after storm after storm, all pretty brutal and causing major damage to property, buildings, or killing or injuring people.

I think a few weeks back, there was some kind of heatwave all over.  We got up to the high 90s here and I think on the east coast they got in the triple digits.  That was the middle of spring too.

You just have to look around you to figure out that the earth, its enviroment, and the weather is changing.

Well for one, back about 30 years ago everyone was concerned about global cooling- now it's global warming.

Also by the fact that the earth does have natural global warming and global cooling cycles. 300 years ago there was a little ice age.

remember when those scientists found that fossil of lucy down like 100 feet below the waterline...that means that at one time the ocean was lower than it is currently.

Many will claim that our climate is regulated by the sun and other factors that doesn't include humans.

Also you shouldn't be too worried about CO2, why won't the government do anything about cattle. They are one of the largest producers of green house gases-many whom are worse than CO2..... such as nitrous oxide and methane.
