Gold Coast Australia continues winning streak in 2011 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race
Australian yacht, Gold Coast Australia clinched their fourth consecutive victory in the first four stages of the 2011 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The Aussie team has been quite consistent throughout the event. The Australian team crossed the finish
line in the fourth race of the world’s longest ocean race course that comprised of 40,000-mile circumnavigation under blue skies on October 30.
Gold Coast Australia clinched ten points for winning the race. In addition to these points, the Australian team also secured three bonus points for reaching the Scoring Gate first. Skipper, Richard Hewson from Hobart, Tasmania, was quite happy with the team’s
effort and feels happy to be in Western Australia.
Speaking to local media at the conclusion of fourth race, Hewson said, “It’s fantastic to be home. I love Western Australia, it’s like a second home and it’s fantastic to be back here. It’s down to good management and good sailing. The guys pushed really
hard, we’re a good team and everyone works hard and really deserves this, so it’s fantastic.”
The Aussie team had a sever spinnaker wrap during the race which caused them a bit of trouble but they, somehow, managed to maintain their yacht.
The 31-year-old Hewson told about the problem, “The spinnaker issue was quite full on – we knew we had a big storm approaching and when the spinnaker wrapped we knew we had to get it down. If we didn’t then we probably would have lost the rig so there was
no choice but to cut it away. Luckily we had two other spinnakers.”
The overall standings at the conclusion of Day 4 are given below:
