well

now that i played 5 rounds of golf, i decided to calculate my new golf handicap for this year.

dont think i did nething wrong.

but i ended up with i think a 17

my lowest score out of 5 was an 88 for 18 holes.

Technically, since you have only 5-6 rounds only your lowest differential will be used.  More differentials will be used as you approach 20 rounds.

The differential for each round is calculated using the following formula:

(Score - Course Rating) x (113 / Slope Rating)

You would take the lowest 10 out of your last 20 differentials and multiply that by .96 to arrive at your handicap index.  The index can then be translated into a course handicap for any course by the following formula:

Index * (slope rating/113)

Your handicap will generally be more than your index as a result of most slopes being higher than 113. All courses have charts to help you determine your handicap based on your index. Your handicap is meant to represent your potential, not your average score which is a common misconception.

To answer your question, that handicap could be correct depending on the slope and course rating that you shot an 88 on.  As you play more rounds your handicap will become more accurate.

The other John F (no relation!)  is correct. Tyler B is close, except that the Par of the course has absolutely no impact on the handicap.

Your handicap is decided by many different aspects. 1.) Course Rating, and slope. 2) Par of course.3) Total amount of scores. If you shoot 88 and course is a par 71 you are somewhat close. Use this website for help.
