  1. It depends on the country. Singapore gives it's atheletes the most - at around 800k for a gold medal. China is around 36k, and the United States is only a little bit more. I heard this on ESPN radio this morning in Los Angeles.

  2. There's no money, unless you count the value of the medal itself.

That said, winning medals is a good way to develop a second career doing endorsements, TV shows, coaching, etc.  That could be worth millions.  And even without a medal, your buddies at home will probably buy you a lot of free beers just for making it that far.

  3. Yes. The Olympics do not give money but many countries give their athletes cash for winning. Countries that do this include Greece, US, Canada, Japan, Germany, Israel, Malaysia, and Russia.

Belarusian athletes will be given $100,000, $50,000, and 30,000 each in their home country for gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Belarusian athletes who win gold medals at the Beijing Olympics will be provided with meat and sausage for the rest of their lives, a meat company announced.

  4. The get no money at all.

  5. Most do not get paid, some countries choose to pay their athletes based on their performance, others get money from sponsors.

  6. They don't get direct monetary prizes, but they most likely get some endorsements.
