Question:

Gold rams ok for tank?

I am interested in buying two gold rams for my 65 litre tank. Is it ok to put them in with honey gouramis and guppies? I have heard mixed opinions with some people saying they are peaceful, but some saying they are nippy.

  1. The Rams would be a fine choice, but watch for them to pair up.  If you get a male and a female, and they decide to pair off, your other fish will be in trouble in such a small tank.  Try to get two of the same s*x (they are very easy to s*x).  You shouldn't have any problems with a Honey Gourami, but the Guppies will likely find themselves the targets of any aggression the Rams have.  If the Guppies venture anywhere near the Rams' territories, their tails will be gone in a flash.  A school of Tetras, Rasboras, or smaller Barbs would be a much better choice.

  2. Yes they are peaceful.

  3. Personally, Rams are too much like cichilids. Nippy, and unpredictable. I would not advise them with Gouramis, as they have delicate feelers and finnage, and can become ill at the first sign of stress.

  4. hi rams are lovely to look at but are so so prone to dying on you very easily, i had 8 rams once in a tank and they all died, i bought another pair and put them in a different tank but they died after a few months, the problems with keeping them is they are very commonly brought in with in with internal bacterial problems or internal paracites which you cannot see and all of a sudden they go off colour and each die usually at a rate of one a week,

to s*x them is fairly easy, the male has an elongated dorsal fin and the female will have a slight pink tinge to her belly, if you are in the uk i would only advise using R.O water,

about them being aggressive well they are usually only aggressive towards their own kind when the dominant pair are in season, mine always leave the rest of the fish in the tank alone
