  2. The Golden age refers to quite a bit of Elizabeth's rule...but especially the period after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, which although was partially due to favourale winds etc, was attributed to her ability to rule.  

    By this time in her reign, there was also somewhat of a stability and tolerance when it came to religion, and given that in past years, under her father, her brother and her sister's rule you could be burned by just reading about o different religion.  This new found calm in the nation, along with the great strides made in theatre and quality of life lent to the naming of this time period "the golden age"
