Golden Boy Promotions cautions Sky Sports for dropping Amir Khan’s fight – Boxing news
The chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer has warned Sky Sports on refusing to broadcast Amir Khan’s unification fight with Zab Judah on July 23, 2011.
Schaefer told Sky Sports that they might lose some of the biggest fights in the sport by doing things like this.
The most flattering statement however was when the chief told the media that they are the authority and if anyone is going to turn his back on Khan, he will also turn his back on them. The chief also claimed England will produce the best pound-for-pound
fighters in the world in a few months time.
While speaking on his inclusion, he remarked, “We are a family. If anyone turns their back on Amir, they turn their back on Golden Boy. Mark my words, England will have the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world within the next 12 to 18 months.”
The unification bout between the World Boxing Association’s World Super Lightweight Champion Amir Khan and the current International Boxing Federation’s Light Welterweight Champion Zab Judah is scheduled for July 2011 at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Centre. This
fight will now be shown by Primetime, which is a one-off Pay Per View channel.
Amir ‘The King’ Khan’s last title defence against Paul McCloskey, which was held in Manchester in April 2011, was also not shown by Sky Sports. In fact, Primetime was the one which covered the event and it is pretty much turning out to be the same story.
The 24-year-old Khan, who has won 25 of his 26 fights including 17 by the way of knockout, meanwhile also showed his frustration and said he will prove Sky Sports wrong. He stated he will win a few big fights and then the channel will realise his importance.
“I don't know if it's me of they don't enjoy my boxing style,” he told the
media. “But when I was with Frank Warren, they showed my fights with [Dmitriy] Salita and [Oisin] Fagan, and they were no-bodies. There are some big, big fights down the line for me and hopefully they will come knocking on my door.”
