Golden Gate Fields stakes schedule and changes made for the 2012-13 winter-spring meet
Golden Gate Fields’ winter-spring meet will start on 26 December, 2012, and the track’s racing secretary David Jerkens said that at least they wanted to keep their signature races and wanted to cover everybody participating, but there have been changes from
last year.
One thing hasn’t changed, and it is the 11 stakes card is going to be there just like last year, and it will be highlighted by the Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby, the Grade 3, $100,000 San Francisco Mile, and Grade 3, $100,000 All American.
The All American is traditionally run in the fall, but this time around it has switched places with the Grade 3 Berkeley Stakes, which is moved to the fall, and the All American to take place in the spring.
In terms of total purse of these stakes races will sum up to $950,000, which will be a decrease of $150,000 from last year, because there have been a few deductions from last year in certain races.
“We wanted to run the All American around Memorial Day and the Berkeley in the fall.” Said Jerkens. “It was just a little tweak.”
Golden Gate Fields winter-spring meet has excluded some races from the meet, and at the same time has gone on to add some. The $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes has been eliminated from the meet, but in its place the $50,000-added Camilla Urso has been added to stakes
schedule.
The Alcatraz was exclusive for 3-year-olds, and was run over the turf course of the venue, and the Camilla Urso is six furlong sprint for older fillies and mares.
The reduction of purses was made from the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile, which was last year offering $150,000  will now be offering $100,000 and the California Oaks for sophomore fillies will also face reduction from $100,000 to $50,000 this meet.
“We’re trying to be more viable,” Jerkens said. “We wanted to try at least to cover everybody and keep our signature races. We could always add an overnight stakes if revenues improve.
“We’re also doing everything we can to use the [non-conditioned] allowance races.”
