Golden Joystick Awards 2011 – Introduction – Part 2
After the brief introduction to the Golden Joystick Awards and how they set the ideal model for others to follow, especially you Oscars, we also took gamers on a brief tour through a few of the categories the games will be pit in where it will be up to the
fans to vote for their favourites.
With the Best Shooters, MMOs, RPGs and a few others out of the way, it is time now to move on to another category that brings with it plenty of Va-va-voom.
Best Racing: Racing games have been around since almost the very beginning, and now almost every mobile phone comes with a pre-installed racing game as an industry standard. Luckily for us, none of those games, which are fun while they last
yet quick to become monotonous, are up for nomination.
Polyphony Digitals’ driving simulator Gran Turismo 5 is however, and it will be squaring off against the high octane no holds barred, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Also in the running are Codemasters’ Dirt 3 and F1 2010.
Best Sports: The winner here could even be declared the best sport in the world if one looks at it. In fact, it should be declared as such. So what will be the best sport in the world, will it be football (FIFA 11), tennis (Top Spin 4),
baseball (MLB 11) or any of the other seven remaining categories?
Best Strategy: Potential vote casters will have nine options to choose from here with Pride of Nations, Ruse and Starcraft II Wings of Liberty all nominated in the category.
With all the individual categories taken care of, there is the small matter of THE game of the year. Yet, just to take things to another level, something the video game industry has made a trademark for itself, the category is aptly titled:
Ultimate Game of the Year (because ‘Game of the Year’ just wasn’t enough):
This where things get serious, the genre classifications have been put aside and the best games are up for your votes. What makes the choice so difficult here is that a gamer will find himself torn between two, or more, of his favourite titles.
This year, the choice is especially tough with 20 games each worthy of the gamers’ single vote. While it may not be the toughest decision a gamer would have to make in his life, (that belongs to the choice of choosing between Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty:
Modern Warfare 3) it is still up there.
FIFA 11, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Halo Reach and Killzone 3 are just a few of the games up for nomination and it will be exciting to see who the winner turns out to be come the end of voting.
The last category is where it seems gamers were given the opportunity to unwind and relax after the agonizing decision that was choosing the Ultimate Game of the Year.
One to watch: This category has over 20 nominees and voting here is pretty much based on speculation as opposed to experience. All the award is good for is adding hype to the game and maybe a bit of pressure on the developers to deliver
an ever better game, or to gauge the public’s level of expectation regarding their upcoming title.
