Golden Lions announce release of Jano Vermaak to Blue Bulls: Currie Cup - Rugby news
The South African provincial rugby union side, Golden Lions, has handed over an early release to their scrum half Jano Vermaak, which will allow him to make his debut for his newly signed club,
Blue Bulls, during their upcoming 2011 Currie Cup encounters.
Earlier last week, Lions confirmed that their experienced scrumhalf Vermaak had signed a new two-year deal with the Blue Bulls. It was expected that the he would join them at the end of the
2011 Currie Cup competition, particularly as his current contract binds him with the club until the month of the October.
However, later the Lions announced that they will only utilise the services of Vermaak, provided their other scrum halves in the side sustain the injuries.
Lions currently are in a middle of a splendid spell in the season. They are the only unbeaten team in this year’s 2011 Currie Cup competition. After four rounds of the competition, Lions are
placed at the top position with 17 points coming from their four games in the tournament so far.
In their Saturday, August 6 encounter, Lions defeated Blue Bulls to register their fourth consecutive win in the season.
Commenting on the departure of Vermaak, Lions head coach John Mitchell said, “Sure, it’s a blow to lose a player of Jano’s caliber, but now we can look to the future – who at the moment is
Michael Bondesio and Rudy Paige, who I see great potential in – and we can start investing in and focusing on them and developing other future scrum halves within the Lions.”
Mitchell further added that Vermaak decision to part ways with the club was on the cards. He further added that no one can force a player to stay against his will at the club. He expressed
his best wishes for Vermaak’s future endeavors.
The 26-year-old Vermaak made his provincial side debut in 2005. He has won 58 provincial appearances in different domestic encounters and has scored 83 points, which contain 13 tries.
