I have a 4 month old baby golden retriever named Simba and he really loves to chew and l**k anything he sees. What is the best way to make him stop chewing? I let him chew things most of the time because he's teething, but I do not want him to chew shoes or big clumps of grass laying around our backyard.

  1. When he is chewing something that he should not be chewing.. tell him NO!

Remove the item.. then immediatly give him one of his own toys and chewies..  then praise him.

Make sure he has his OWN things that are designated for play and chewing.  If you let him chew on an old sock or shoe, then how is he to know the difference from that and a new one?

When you see him playing with one of his own things, praise him.  Encourage play with his own toys as well.  You may want some "indoor" and "outdoor" toys so you have plenty at hand at all times.

Also check into products like Bitter Apple... Or Nature's Miracle Best Behavoir.

Do remember to always give him an acceptable chew toy and then praise when you remove an item from him.  Otherwise it will turn into a game of keep away later when you try to take something from him!  He needs to think that he's getting something "better" for giving up the object.

  2. Let him chew the grass, dogs chew grass when they upset stomachs or are teething. Keep him away from Cords and Wires inside the house, and make sure He is always Occupied and busy, when dogs get bored they Develop bad habits. Make SURE He has some really good chew toys, like some old clean socks tied into a not, and some bones bought from a Grocery store. Good Luck!

  3. Take anything you don't want him to chew away from him.

I used a Puppy Kong, with Puppy paste in it and put it in the freezer - then when it'd frozen I gave it to my Goldie when he was teething.  It's a painful time for the baby, try and soothe his poor gums.

  4. Your dog needs to learn the "leave it" command, and the "drop it" command. Even though this is totally normal behavior for a pup, we don't want him to continue doing this as he gets older.

Put your pup on a leash, and walk him by a bunch of objects. Wait untill your dog goes to pick one up, give him a leash correction and say "no, leave it". Immediately give him a piece of kibble, or a treat to reinforce the good behavior. You can also do this with treats on the ground, and tell your dog to "leave it". If he does, reward him. Use this command when your dog is smelling, l*****g, or biting something hes not supposed to.

The "drop it" command is used for when your pup has something in his mouth that you want out. Get a ball and start playing with him, when he puts the ball in his mouth, take it out and say "drop it". Your dog will soon learn to associate objects coming out of his mouth with the "drop it" command.

As a guide dog pup trainer, the "leave it" command is used so many times a day, that people think our dog's names are leave it. Just kidding, but this is how we teach it to the pups, using kibble.

    Good luck....btw, I love goldens

  5. give him a toy

if he is teething he needs somethin to chew on like a toy so give him a toy to chew on to ease his pain and if u give him a treat after a while he'll only chew on that toy cause he"ll know he's being good by chewin that toy
