Question:

Golden Retrievers Colour?

I have a typically 'Golden' Golden retriever yet in Ireland this is becoming a rarity since virtually all Goldens are being bred almost pure white. The breed spec allows for a wide variation but I feel this to be spoiling the traditional breed/colour.Oddly enough the American Goldens seem more like mine. Why is this a trend here and in U.K. and is anyone still promoting the 'true' golden colour?

  1. Fashion - pure and simple. Right now pale cream is the in colour for some reason - the more people want it, the more it will be bred for & the more there will be.

What goes round comes round & no doubt when a real rich Golden becomes hard to find people will want that instead.

The UK & FCI standard is the same:

Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany

  2. yea, my aunt and friend has a golden golden retriever!

  3. That's probably just the fashion in Ireland. Dogs of the same breed can look different from place to place depending on what local breeders prefer.

  4. golden because it said "GOLDEN" Retrievers

  5. You might want to look at the breed standard for Ireland.

In AKC, goldens are not suppossed to be extremely pale or dark..  so the "white" looking ones are not really as desired.

The standard may be written different in Ireland, and the preference may be more towards the lighter colors.

Standards vary slightly from country to country..  for example AKC disqualifies white german shepherds.. however they are an accepted color in the UKC ring.  In my breed, both hairless and puff Cresteds must have erect ears in AKC.. but for other countries, puffs may have drop ears!
