Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry wins NBA Sportsmanship award – NBA News
Golden State Warriors’ instrumental shooting guard Stephen Curry was presented the Joe Dumars Trophy after winning the 2010-11 National Basketball Association Sportsmanship award.
The 23-year-old Curry from the Pacific division received 88 out of 347 possible first-place votes among the six divisional winners to clinch the honour. The other five contenders were Chicago Bulls’ Luol Deng, Charlotte Bobcats’ D.J. Agustin, San Antonio Spurs’ George Hill, Portland Trailblazers’ LaMarcus Aldridge and New Jersey Nets’ Deron Williams.
This was the seventh successive year that NBA players voted for the award received 11 points for every first place vote, nine points for every second place vote, seven points for third, five points for fourth, three points for fifth and one point for every sixth place vote earned. As a result the Curry earned 2445 total points.
The prolific small forward Deng of the Bulls procured the second spot with 84 votes whereas Trailblazers’ spirited power forward came in at third place with 56 votes.
On Thursday, the NBA announced that on behalf of the award winner Stephen, the league will make a donation of $10,000 to Habitat For Humanity East Bay which makes affordable homes for the families with the help of the volunteers. On behalf of each player, the NBA will also donate $5000 to a charity of their own choice.
Sportsman of the Year award handed out annually reflects the ideals and promotes fair play, integrity and ethical behaviour which is a key focus of the NBA cares program. The trophy is named after the Hall of Famer and Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars who was the first player to receive the title in 1995-96.
Curry truly exemplified a true sportsmen spirit on the court with his impressive versatile play that enabled him to grab the league’s Sportsmanship of the Year award. In his second season with the franchise, Curry has proved that he has the potential of becoming one of the best players in the league. Stephen finished the 2010-11 season with an average of 18.6 points, 5.8 assists and 3.90 rebounds.
Warriors’ superstar Curry had a phenomenal season on the court and powered the starting five for some electrifying victories. Although, Golden State failed to mark their way into the play-offs after a vigorous fight back, Stephen kept the fans on their toes throughout the season as he carried the action impressively along with the leading scorer of the team Monta Ellis.
Golden State Warriors are looking forward to improve their ranking in the light of their proficient shooting guard who only lacks professional exposure. He carries enormous capability and strength to dominate the proceedings in the game.
