Golden State Warriors and the Stephen Curry puzzle – NBA Feature
Stephen Curry has been one of the most talented point guards on the NBA scene since his arrival in 2009 and it is really sad that the 24 year old guard is struggling to find a contract extension with his team, the Golden State Warriors.
So what has prevented the Warriors from offering him a contract extension so far?
The answer to that question is very obvious, and that is despite his impressive displays on court, Curry has struggled with ankle injuries for the past two seasons and the fitness issues have forced him to miss a large number of games.
At the moment, he is still recovering from an ankle injury which ensured that he played only one third of last season. In a total of 26 games last season, Curry average14.7 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals, all below his career figures.
The Golden State management are no doubt interested in retaining Curry and that became quite evident when they let go Monta Ellis, rather than him, in order to bring in Andrew Bogut from Milwaukee Bucks last season.
But his injury woes could complicate the matter and that is probably the reason, an announcement on a new contract has not been made. The last date for a new deal is October 30th and the Warriors would want to evaluate Curry’s condition and fitness before they make a final decision.
If the Warriors are willing to stick with Curry, they are in for a $42 million contract for four years which is only fair for a player of his calibre. For that though, Curry will need to prove that he is completely recovered and finally ready to be the floor general, Warriors want him to be.
If that can happen and Andrew Bogut also manages to stay fit, the Bay Area franchise can become a major player in the Western Conference. They have an excellent shooting guard in Klay Thompson and few young players who are battle hardened after they were forced to carry the injury stricken roster last season.
The arrival of Harrison Barnes, provided he can deliver to the hype, can also give the Warriors a big boost and we may be in for some surprises from this outfit.
