Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry looking to return to college: NBA News
It’s not just the Cleveland Cavaliers rookies Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson, who are heading back to their respective colleges during this NBA lockout. Golden State Warriors’ 23 year old combo guard Stephen Curry has also decided to complete his degree during this uncertain lockout period rather than playing overseas.
Both Irving and Thompson were drafted recently, therefore it wasn’t as difficult for them to make the decision to return to their colleges, but Curry on the other hand turned pro when he was picked up by the Warriors as 7th overall from the 2009 National Basketball Association Draft. Making such a decision was always going to be difficult for him, as most of the NBA players are looking overseas to make good cash.
However, the Skill Challenge champion had promised his parents and Coach Bob McKillop back when he entered in the 2009 draft that he would definitely return to the Davidson College in order to complete his degree as soon as he could. Now Curry is fulfilling the promise he had made to his coach and parents.
McKillop said, “He’s walking the walk. Our culture in college athletics is going through a few hits right now, but here’s a great story.”
Curry, who got married recently, is making the best use of this break. For now, Curry is recovering from his ankle injury and later the he will commence his practice sessions. Attending the classes at Davidson will also allow him to spend some quality time with his wife Ayesha Alexander.
Curry needs to cover just five more classes in order to gain his undergraduate degree in sociology and he will sign for the classes as soon as the NBA cancels the camps before the regular-season.
Completing his degree is not the only motive of this young guard. Curry is also looking to give back Davidson what he had learned over the years. Irrespective of the fact that National Collegiate Athletics Association might not allow him to participate in the practice sessions of Davidson’s men’s basketball team, he is looking to impart some of his valuable insight on the young college players.
Curry had a sensational last season with the Warriors. Together with Monta Ellis, he formed the core of young and athletic offense that tumbled many teams during the regular season. With Ellis involved in the trade speculation, Curry is thought to be the star around whom the Warriors are looking to build in future.
