Golden State Warriors new scouting head Larry Riley still adjusting to his new role – NBA News
The Golden State Warriors are making big moves in an attempt to make the basketball club one of the more successful ones in the NBA.
They are headed to a new home (San Francisco) in a few years with a new fan base and a sparkling new arena. And the transition from an average roster to a strong one has already begun.
The Warriors have made some shuffles in the front office as well. Co-owner Joe Lacob appointed assistant General Manager Bob Myers as the new General Manager back in April. The former General Manager Larry Riley was transferred
as head of Warriors scouting.
Riley was in Chicago for the NBA Draft combine, and admitted that he is still adjusting to the new role after having called the shots in the Warriors organization for many years.
“I’d be disingenuous if I said anything other than there is some real disappointment about not being the general manager anymore.  I think the team is set to be pretty good. It took a lot of work to get it to this point, and I’d
like to be in the position to enjoy the success. I guess I’m still in a position to be part of it, but it took some time to realize that this is something I can fully embrace,” said Riley while talking to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Riley knew that long time player agent Myers was being groomed to take the reins of the organizations from him, but thought that the transition would take a few more years. He said that he had held discussions with owners Lacob
and Bob and knew that this was the eventual plan, but thought he had more time.
The Warriors have kept Riley in a scouting position because of the immense experience he has in such activities and the fact that he has been involved in staffs that went on to draft great players. Riley has worked with staffs
that went on to draft Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Mike Bibby, Steve Francis, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to name a few players.
His experience of 20 plus years in the basketball arena gives him the edge in making decisions on player profiles and analyzing the right needs of the club in order to find the right match.
