Golden State Warriors not going after Dwight Howard, content with what they have – NBA Update
Some reports in the press had suggested that the Golden State Warriors had jumped into the fray in the race to sign Orlando Magic super star Dwight Howard. The Magic centre has been the centrepiece to trade plans of many teams in the league but the Warriors
have distanced themselves from such aspirations.
Howard has made no secret of his desire to leave the Orlando Magic, and he hasn’t made a secret of wanting to play for the Brooklyn Nets as well. That should have put other teams off but still the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks have
been credited with an interest in him.
Golden State Warriors were also mentioned in the same breath, but now owner Joe Lacob has clarified that his team are not in the hunt. And Lacob had a solid reason not to pursue someone who could end up leaving the Warriors after a single season; Andrew
Bogut.
“I doubt it,” Lacob told NBA’s official website. “I never say never. But we have somebody called Andrew Bogut. He is, in our opinion, one of the three best centres in the whole NBA, and in most people’s opinion. And he wants to be here and is a great fit.
We think we have a really nice nucleus now going forward.”
Golden State acquired Bogut from the Milwaukee Bucks by parting with prized guard Monta Ellis. While there weren’t many question marks over Ellis’ scoring ability that could one day see him develop into a super star in the NBA, the Warriors knew they were
weak in defence and were more interested in the solidity Bogut offered.
Bogut also wants to play for Golden State, which means Lacob can count on him for years to come. On the other hand, Dwight has already issued a warning saying that he will only sign a new contract with one team, believed to be the Nets.
Never mind Howard, the Warriors are not looking forward to much trade activity at all this offseason.
“We’ve got pretty much what we want in place,” Lacob remarked. “We’re in the free-agency market. First of all, we want to keep Brandon Rush. Then there’s a couple of pieces that we’re looking at for supplementing the roster.”
