Golden State Warriors relieve Top Business Executives off their duties – NBA Update
As the lockout story continues, many teams have taken strict measures against the employees on the business side of operations. Where some have experienced pay cuts, others have been relieved of their duties. This trend has now
encapsulated even the top level of business executives.
The latest in line in this regard have been the Golden State Warriors. They are apparently undergoing a series of important steps to revamp the system at the club. These developments have taken place since the arrival of their
new owner Joe Lacob.
One of the first steps that Lacob has taken, since taking charge, has been the removal of business executives working on the highest level. These include positions such as the Vice President and Senior Vice President level managers.
Even team President Robert Rowell has not been spared.
However, the Sales department has been largely unaffected by the situation. “In the end, all senior positions are or are being replaced except for our sales area,” Lacob said. Currently, Lacob’s major concern is the hiring of a
new team President and a Marketing Vice President.
This is not the first time this year that such drastic changes have been made to the system at the club. Earlier coach Keith Smart was replaced with Mark Jackson, Jerry West was hired to act as basketball operations consultant
and Bob Myers was given the duty of acting as the assistant General Manager of the team.
It is reported that the real reasons behind changes on such a massive scale are only known on the inside. Teams generally discuss these matters behind closed doors and there is more to the story than what meets the eye.
However, Lacob has taken things one step at a time and his policy of gradual change has so far worked for the club. A sudden revamping of the system might have induced chaos and led to disastrous results.
Like many other teams, Lacob also targeted the basketball side of operations, primarily because a club can survive with mediocre business operations, but not without a powerful basketball operations team. For this reason, Lacob
hired a new coach to go along with a new assistant general manager as well.
There is still a long way to go before things can settle down at the club. Although Lacob has been successful in strengthening operations on the basketball side of things, major thought and planning needs to be done to cater to
the breakdown on the business side of things.
Considering the above mentioned context, the lockout seems to have been a blessing in disguise for Lacob and his Warriors. It has enabled them to take their time and try to develop an efficient as well as a well integrated business
department; something which would have been an extremely difficult task with the season in flow.
