Golden State Warriors won’t offer an extension to Brandan Wright
The Golden State Warriors announced on Monday 1 November that they are not going to offer an extension to forward Brandan Wright before today’s deadline making the 6ft 10in power forward
a restricted free agent next summer.
According to Warriors general manager Larry Riley, the decision was tough, but he had to do it since every GM in the league is in a tough position because of the uncertainty in next year’s
collective-bargaining agreement. However, Riley said that they are going to evaluate Wright this season.
"We'll be evaluating Brandan throughout the season," Riley said. "We have a good relationship with both Brandan and his agent, Jim Tanner."
On the other hand, Wright, who was the eighth-overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, expressed his intention of staying with the Warriors, but said that he’s ready to move on if the team will
eventually decide to let him go.
"I want to play, but there is also a comfort level with this team and this area. It would be tough to walk away," said Wright before their game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday 1
November where he finished with 11 points. "At the same time, if they don't want me, I'm ready to move forward with another team and come back and burn them."
The 22-year old forward has only played 77 games in his first two seasons in the league because of a series of shoulder injuries, but Wright believes that he can help the Warriors in a lot
of ways although he still has a lot of rooms for improvement.
"I consider myself a versatile player, and I'm working to show that I can be an interchangeable part at any of the frontcourt positions," Wright said. "I'm a young player who has so much
room to grow. I still have a lot in the tank and a lot to prove."
The Charlotte Bobcats are reportedly interested in acquiring Wright to join fellow North Carolina products, team owner Michael Jordan and head coach Larry Brown.
