Golden Yank's long awaited win came in the Louisiana Downs $100,000 Unbridled on 10 September
Trained by Gary Thomas for Millard R Selvin Revocable Trust, the seven-year-old gelding, Golden Yank, managed an off the pace win in the $100,000 Unbridled at Louisiana Downs on 10 September, 2011.
The sharp looking son of Yankee Gentleman, went on to bag the Unbridled, which proved to be his fifth career stakes' win, but it took 3 years for the old gelding to post a win, and it took a long time coming to be in the winner’s circle.
His last win was in the Zia Park Derby in December, 2008, since the lone win, Golden Yank has had participated in eleven races altogether, and experienced defeat in all 11 of them.
However, the older gelding has put himself in consideration for the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, after his well-paced run in the Louisiana Downs featured race.
The Clark Handicap will commence later this fall at Churchill Downs on 25 November, and it is a Grade 1 with a purse of $500,000.
The shift from dirt to turf paid dividends for Golden Yank, as he felt comfortable over a ground labelled good, went on to defeat Lonesome Street by half a length.
Trainer Gary Thomas has plans for Golden Yank, before the he considers him for the Clark Handicap, as the gelding is returning to Kentucky to be considered to run in the Remington Green.
Gary revealed his big goal is the Clark Handicap for Golden Yank, but he wants his horse to run in a race before they go all out for the Churchill Downs featured race, and this would give the trainer time to have a good look at him.
Before the Unbridled, Golden Yank had run in three races in the year 2011, and the closest he came to winning a race was in his last race at Keeneland, when he participated in a 1 1/16 mile long Allowance race.
On 17 April, 2011, took on his favoured distance under jockey J Theriot and finished 4th behind Baryshnikov, Don Cavallo and Hollinger, who finished first second and third, respectively.
