  1. Depending on who they have in front of you, but if you have never gone three rounds before your probably going to get exhausted. Most boxing gyms wait until a kid has enough skill before they throw him into the ring they will teach you the Punch's and exercises instead of just "Feeding you to the Wolfs". When they make you spar its usually with someone who has more experience than you because if you get two guys that know nothing they are just going to bang away and try to make it a street fight. Don't be worried they usually put a guy in with you not to see if you can take punches because their are fighters that are good pros's that cant take a good punch its more the less to help you learn what to do in a real boxing match. They best way to prepare yourself for Boxing MMA Wrestling or any type of combat sport is to run run run run. Fighting is measured in two things skill and conditioning. Most guys do horrible at these sports not because they cant fight but because they aren't in shape. If i were you I would spend a few days 3 to 4 out of the week just running before I even dreamed of steppingng in the ring.

If you don't want to get inside the ring and spar you can tell them that your just taking up boxing to stay in shape.

  2. I don't know where you are planning to sign up but all gyms are different.  I have heard of some gyms that just throw you in there to see "how tough you are".  In my eyes, that is just plain foolish.

The gym in South Philly where I trained,  they used a different philosphy.  Some guys just came in to get in shape.  They were given some instruction and left on their own to hit the bag and skip rope, etc.  If they wanted to try sparring, they would be put in with someone who was experienced but would also work with them and not just beat them up.

I was coming in to compete.  So they spent more time giving me instruction.  Some sparring sessions were heavily monitored and instructional.  The trainer would stop us and give instructions in mid round.  At the start, he made sure we weren't trying to kill each other as we were still trying to use proper technique.  Eventually, I was allowed to move into a phase with more intense sparring.

I would research the gym you are going to.  And if you have a choice, go to a gym that will teach you before throwing you to the wolves.  Best of luck to you.

  3. Hmm,well at my MMA class, they didnt throw into the ring until I knew how to strike (The Owner is a Champ Kickboxer,Boxer, and Karate BlackBelt so He teaches us to strike better than Most MMA schools) He we Learn grappling and Judo stuff After words. Anyways If they do that then, hey its there way. Most schools make sure you do Lots of speed bag and Punching bag work befor you jump in the ring.

  4. no that would be stupid. think about it. you go to a boxing gym to learn not to get beatin up. yes it is a fight but you don't simply punch each other. there is a strategy and much more to learn about boxing than taking a hit. in fact your trainer is gonna teach you how not to get hit and hit at the same time

  5. that sounds counter productive, a real trainer will drill fundamentals into you, get you into decent shape before you spar, and then it'll be people around your same level, starting out slow and often with isolation sparring, etc.  you might want to look for another club.

  6. thats what they used to do back in the 20s and 30s
