  1. The research that led to golden rice was conducted with the goal of helping children who suffer from Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD). At the beginning of the 21st century, 124 million people, in 118 countries in Africa and South East Asia, were estimated to be affected by VAD. VAD is responsible for 1-2 million deaths, 500,000 cases of irreversible blindness and millions of cases of xerophthalmia annually. Children and pregnant women are at highest risk. Vitamin A is supplemented orally and by injection in areas where the diet is deficient in Vitamin A. As of 1999 there were 43 countries that had vitamin A supplementation programs for children under 5; in 10 of these countries, two high dose supplements are available per year, which according to UNICEF could effectively eliminate VAD. However UNICEF and a number of NGOs involved in supplementation note that more frequent low-dose supplementation should be a goal where feasible.

Claims that genetically engineered "golden rice" can help prevent blindness by boosting vitamin A intake have been bolstered by a new strain.

Compared with the original golden rice unveiled in 2000, "Golden rice 2" contains up to 23 times more provitamin A, the substance converted in the body into vitamin A. This vitamin is vital for preventing childhood blindness, which affects 500,000 children worldwide each year.

Golden Rice has been available to these people for over five years, but the release has been blocked by Greenpeace because golden rice is a genetically modified strain. Golden rice was developed with money donated by many organisations to help these poor people. The company owning golden rice had pledged that the rice would be donated to these countries free of charge. Yet Greenpeace continues to campaign to block the release of golden rice while thousands go blind and die each year. To me this is not only wrong but criminal, Greenpeace should have to answer for this. I am giving references to both sides so you can read and make up your own mind, but you have my opinion.
