Golden run fired Louis Oosthuizen to the top at the Deutsche Bank Championship
Louis Oosthuizen fired a spectacular seven birdies in a row en route to an eight-under par round of 63, as the South African claimed a three-shot third-round lead over the world number one, Rory McIlroy, in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The 2010 Open Championship winner began brightly with a birdie on the second hole. He then ignited his round with a remarkable run of seven consecutive birdies from the fourth hole, and stormed to the top of the leaderboard.
That golden run came to an end on the 11th hole, after he missed another chance for a birdie. The 17th hole witnessed him card the only bogey of the day, which he managed to offset with a birdie on the final hole of the day.
"Once I started getting birdies, making putts, I started going at the pins because my swing felt great," Oosthuizen said.
According to him, he was in a perfect position to break the 60-mark after posting an eight-under par on the first 10 holes. He also created back-to-back birdie chances from the 11th to the 14th hole. However, he was not lucky enough to reach his target in
the end.
"And after 10 holes being 8‑under, you always think about getting it to 59,” he said. “I didn't do anything different from there on in. I hit great shots on 11, 12, 13, 14, so I gave myself good chances to post that number”.
He also showed his disappointment for missing the first green in regulation of the day, on the 17th hole.
“With the one bogey on 17, the first green I missed, so a bit disappointed at the trap shot I hit there. But nice birdie on 18,” he explained.
Oosthuizen made a slow start to his 2012 PGA Tour campaign and picked up some pace when he finished third and second at the Shell Houston Open and the Masters Tournament, respectively.
Afterwards, he once again started displaying poor performances and missed the cut four times in his next seven appearances.
At the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, he made a strong comeback by finishing fourth on the leaderboard.
Last week, he recorded another good finish at The Barclays and shared the fifth spot. This week, he now has a great chance to improve his track record in the season by converting close finishes to a victory.
According to the golf commentators, he currently has the commanding lead and he can maintain it till the end of the tournament, by maintaining consistency in his game.
