Golden set victory allows Italy to overcome Uruguay – Volleyball News
Women’s beach volleyball teams from Italy used a golden set to overcome Uruguay in Round-1 of the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup.
Italy competed with two teams (two-player teams) in the opening round the Olympic Qualifying Tournament that consisted of Giombini-Orsi Toth and Gioria-Momoli. The two tandems fought for the Italian legacy and worked out an amazing performance. They were challenged by Gomez-Guigou and Cardozo-Nieto from Uruguay. The score tied after two matches, but Italy managed to dismiss Uruguay by using a golden set.
According to the set formula of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), a 15-point golden set was used to determine the winner of the competition. Russian city Moscow hosted the matches.
The tussle started when Italian pair Giombini and Orsi Toth took on Gomez-Guigou of Uruguay in the opening match of the day. The match spanned over three sets and featured a lot action. Uruguay caught a good start in the match and secured opening stanza with two-point margin at 21-19.
The Italians grasped the game plan of opponents and came up with better attack and defence to break the rhythm of opponents in the following set. Both players on Italian team put up spirited effort and hit powerful shots, which perfectly landed on opposite side. Italian pair played fast after the second technical timeout and quickly stretched the gap of points. Better defence of Giombini and convincing attacks of Orsi enabled the team to win second set, 21-15.
It seemed as if Italian pair was back on track. However, the situation drastically changed when Gomez-Guigou regained better status in third set. They paid close attention to the ball and hit exquisite shots. Italian team resisted, but could not avoid the loss. Uruguayan ladies secured third set by posting 15-11 on board and settled for 2-1 victory. Success in the first match moved Uruguay to 1-0.
Nevertheless, the second match featured two different pairs from Italy and Uruguay. The second Uruguayan team, which was composed of Cardozo-Nieto could not defend its position and dropped the decision in straight sets. Italian musketeers totally dominated the scene and captured both sets with heavy margin. The final set scores of second match were 21-9, 21-5.
Italy created the tie of 1-1, which forced a golden set in the competition. Gioria-Momoli of Italy had a tough competition with Gomez-Guigou in the golden set, but finally managed to overcome the rivals. They claimed the final set 17-15 and emerged successful on the opening day of the tournament.
