Question:

Goldfish cycling tank?

Hi everybody! I setup a 15 gallon tank and put it on my window sill ( it is solid wood, very sturdy) and added water. Right now I am in the process of cycling the tank, but my dad went to the pet store and saw this stand and he wants to buy it for me in a couple weeks. So we would have to empty out my 15 gallon tank and put it on the stand then add water. But if I cycle the tank and then we have to remove the water, that would be a waste of time. While removing the water could I put some of the cycled water in a bucket with my fish in there, then set the tank up, add the cycled water and then add declorinated water for the rest of the part? After adding some of my cycled water mixed in with dechlorinated tap water, would I have to cycle my tank over again?

thanks

  1. Well, first of all, I think you should definitely use the stand, because it should be more sturdy than a windowsill. Plus, sunlight can make all kinds of algae grow and it would be a cleaning nightmare - especially with goldfish, who are fairly dirty fish.

You should be able to move the fish WITH THEIR WATER during the move and they should be fine - especially if they've had a few weeks to adjust to the water.

  2. That's actually perfectly fine - and it's what people do when they need to move tanks. The 'cycle' isn't really in the water, it's in the tank itself - all the bacteria growing in the gravel, the filter, all that good stuff - that's what you wanna save!

  3. ok first this isnt even about your goldfish. ok second can you teach me how to make a tank out of wood? and third yes you could just cycle the tank then pur the water into a bu7cket and then refill it in the tank after you set it up on the stand, i dont get why you would put declorinated tap water if your tank is already full of water, but if you do then it will probably go through a mini cycle.

  4. Well 1st of all never put an aquarium infront of a window it'll stunt the growth of algae and fish. You probably can add the water into the bucket, but if you had ever washed the bucket with soap, then you'll have to do the cycling again. Though I wouldn't suggest putting cycled water in a bucket because it may ruin the goodbacteria in the gravel and water.
