Goldfish or Tropical fish?

Should I get goldfish or tropical fish?

tropical! Better yet, Marine. They are so much more exotic than a dinky little goldfish, though goldfish ARE cute.

if you havent kept fish before, then its best to start off with goldfish. they are much less delicate than tropical fish and cheaper and easier to look after. you can also get some quite colourful goldfish.

tropical fish are colourful and exciting but its hard to keep them alive unless you have experience. you also need to buy heaters etc which are costly.

so i would probably say GOLDFISH.

I have had both as well. I like both.

But if I had to choose, I like goldfish better. Goldfish are more individualistic. If you have seen one cichlid (for example), you've seen them all. They are cool from an ornamental (or maybe scientific) standpoint, but ultimately interchangable. Tropical fish are ornaments, like a painting.

Goldfish however are unique. Goldfish are actual _pets_.  Especially fancy varieties...they have been inbred for so long, that they have quirks and behaviors you don't see in wild fish, and that gives them personality IMO.

Also, goldfish are long term pets. They can easily live 20 years or more with proper care. Most tropical fish wont last that long.

go for tropical fish, more expensive but more varity to choose from and alot more fun to watch and feed. after tropical i would go to american and african cichlids, amazing fish to have as pets. goldfish belong in a outside pond i reckon.but always start small and cheap untill you are all q'd up on how to care for all types of fish. good luck.

I personally prefer goldfish because I find them easier to take care of and they are usually very hardy.

However, I also like tropical fish because they bring color and excitement to any aquarium. On the downside, tropical fish require a aquarium heater.

Either way, both types of fish make terrific pets =)

Tropical fish are more fun to watch although you may need a heater to keep them alive where goldfish are cold water fish and there is such a wider selection of tropical fish than goldfish ..
