Goldikova nominated for Horse of the Year
Having won the Breeders’ Cup Mile for a third successive year, when she beat Gio Ponti by one-and-three-quarter lengths at Churchill Downs on Saturday, Goldikova put her marker down for the Eclipse Awards.
A year ago Freddie Head’s mare was the landslide winner of the female turf horse category, when she received 172 votes, polling 131 more than the runner-up Ventura. The daughter of Anabaa is the latest in a long line of European-trained horses to win this award, following the likes of Pebbles, Miesque and Ouija Board.
Whether Goldikova can be a factor in the in the Horse of the Year award is interesting, as that has often been the preserve of the winner of the Breeders’Cup Classic – although in the past two years both Raven’s Pass and Zenyatta were passed over- but the pride of France has received a nomination for the European equivalent in the Cartier Racing Awards.
The Cartier Racing Awards are split into eight categories for the year’s top horses, including the Horse of the Year, and are determined by points earned in Pattern races combined with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists headed by Brough Scott, as well as votes from readers of the Racing Post and Daily Telegraph.
